The Devil's Compromise By Corie Hahn Looking around her surroundings, the angel pondered on what to do with this biosphere. It was up to her as there seemed to be nobody else to do the job. With her kind heart and generous characteristics, the angel flew around the world to figure out which places would be best fitted to have either a hotter or warmer climate, a more dense population, more organisms and ecosystems, and etc. When these things were on her mind, she was rudely interrupted by the devil. She blinked twice, and flew back down to the ground to have a chat with this devil. The devil, however, had other plans and started attacking the angel. When he crossed the line, the angel tried stopping him. Through this vicious combat, the devil stopped suddenly and looked at the angel.
“Look, we can’t fight forever. There’s nobody else. I saw you in this place and overheard...” The devil stated arrogantly, narrowing his eyes at the angel.
The angel wiped sweat off her forehead and nodded, maintaining her sophisticated composure. “Yes. You are correct. I was thinking I could put mountains, trees, and other living organisms on here to fill up this place.”
“WHAT?!” The devil cried out, “You want to put living organisms in here? They’ll just destroy the place. Even if it’s just you and me, we need to keep this place... abiotic.” He said, without even bothering to let the angel finish. “If we bring other living organisms into this place, who knows what they will do?”
“What if they have all the good characteristics?” Angel asked thoughtfully.
The devil shook his head, “No. Nothing in this biosphere will be a utopia. That is impossible. If you try to make it one, I will fight you again. Look, instead of fighting.. let’s make a compromise. Anything you do, I can add some of my touches into it. Deal?”
And so the journey began. Everything the angel would do, the devil would somehow rearrange it. For example, when the angel built humans with her hands and tried to make them as perfect as possible, the devil would put in some evil characteristics such as greed, anger, frustration, betrayal, lies into them. When the angel tried to make education, the devil created war. All in all, the world started off as a blank slate until the angel showed up and tried to change everything so that earth would be a type of utopia. However, she couldn’t get passed the devil’s compromise.
